Deliberate actions that cause large-scale, long-term and serious damage to the ecological system may be punished by imprisonment for 10 to 15 years, APA reports. This was reflected in the amendment to the Criminal Code approved by President Ilham Aliyev.

Under the new Article 104-1 (Ecocide) added to the Criminal Code, the deliberate mass destruction of plant or animal species, poisoning of the atmosphere, soil, or water resources, or any other actions that harm the ecosystem will be punishable by imprisonment for a period of 10 to 15 years if these actions cause an ecological disaster or create a real threat of an ecological disaster.

Arrested for evading military service

A conscript who evaded military service has been arrested in Azerbaijan, oxu.az reports. 19-year-old Ramin Osmanov (name and surname are conditional) evaded military service twice in a row.

In January 2024, R. Osmanov underwent a medical examination by the draft board of the Khatai District Department of the State Service for Mobilization and Conscription for Military Service of the city of Baku and was found fit for military service. By order of the head of the State Service, he was sent to the N-th military unit of the Ministry of Defense for compulsory military service.

The conscript arrived at the Khatai District Department of the State Service to be sent to the military unit, but in order to evade military service, he first cited the need to treat sick teeth, and then, under the pretext of a telephone conversation with his mother, left the specified address. After that, the young man again took similar actions to evade military service.

In this regard, the Khatai District Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal case under Article 321.1 (evasion of military service) of the Criminal Code.

Baku Appeals Court The court upheld the protest against the verdict. According to the decision, the verdict of the court of first instance was overturned. R. Osmanov was sentenced to 1 year of imprisonment and arrested in the courtroom.

COP29 hosts ministerial roundtable on global climate transparency. As reported by APA COP29 President, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Mukhtar Babayev spoke about the importance of presenting a global climate transparency report. UN Deputy Secretary-General Inger Andersen said that the publication of global climate transparency reports will give additional impetus to climate action at the global level.

Then, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Japan, Andorra, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Spain, Singapore, Germany, the Maldives, South Africa and Italy were awarded global climate transparency certificates.
