The Prosecutor General’s Office initiated a criminal case in connection with deportation from Western Azerbaijan

The General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan opened a criminal case in connection with the deportation from Western Azerbaijan. As Trend reports, Deputy Prosecutor General Elmar Jamalov stated this during a speech at a public hearing on the topic “Return to West Azerbaijan: Legal aspects.”

He noted that among the legal aspects related to the return to Western Azerbaijan, an important role is played by the identification and proof of crimes committed by Armenia and their patrons against Azerbaijanis for centuries living in Western Azerbaijan, as well as the registration of these crimes in the manner prescribed by law, and in accordance with international standards, and bringing possible perpetrators to justice.

E. Jamalov indicated that for this reason, on March 30, 2023, the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Azerbaijan Kamran Aliyev opened a criminal case under articles 103 (genocide), 107 (deportation or forced relocation of the population), 109 (persecution) and 120.2-4, 120.2. 7 (premeditated murder) of the Criminal Code of the Azerbaijan Republic. The investigation was entrusted to the Investigative Department of the Prosecutor’s Office. In order to conduct the necessary research, identify historical facts, collect and obtain all supporting materials about persons living in Western Azerbaijan who were subjected to deportation and genocide, appropriate requests were made to the Presidential Library of the Office of the Presidential Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the National Academy of Sciences, the State Statistical Committee, the Public the association of the West Azerbaijan Community, the National Archives Department of the Republic of Azerbaijan, CJSC “Azerbaijan Television and Radio Broadcasting” and many other relevant bodies. In addition, the bodies carrying out operational investigative activities were given operational tasks.
