Cybercriminals stole half a million manats from citizens’ accounts

A network of cybercriminals has been uncovered in Azerbaijan, which used phishing to gain access to citizens’ confidential data, Report informs citing the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. According to the information, Ertugrul Akdemir, Shamkhal Abbasov, Knyaz Hasanov and Sabir Hummetzade have been detained on suspicion of online fraud.

According to preliminary data, they created fake websites of banks and trading platforms, and posted false advertisements about bank lotteries with cash prizes and the sale of expensive phone models at a price lower than their cost. The gang members also organized paid advertising of these links on social networks to attract more citizens. It was established that the criminals stole money from the cards of about 400 citizens, causing them material damage totaling about 500 thousand manats.

A court decision has chosen a preventive measure in the form of arrest for those detained.
