The defendant accused of calling for violent seizure of power sentenced

The criminal trial of Elshan Kerimov, accused of public calls for violent seizure of power, has ended, oxu.az reports. The hearing was held in the Baku Court of Grave Crimes under the chairmanship of Judge Sabuhi Huseynov.

The prosecutor requested 7 years and 6 months of imprisonment for E. Kerimov. Lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova, who delivered a defense speech, asked for a lenient guilty verdict. By the court’s decision, Elshan Kerimov was sentenced to 6 years in prison.

It should be noted that E. Kerimov was detained on April 17, 2024 in the village of Rustamli, Yevlakh district. The Investigative Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office opened a criminal case against him under Article 281.1 (public calls for the violent seizure of power, violent retention of power, or violent change of the constitutional order, or violation of the territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan (AR), as well as dissemination of materials of such content) of the Criminal Code of the AR. On April 19, the Binagadi District Court chose a preventive measure in the form of arrest for a period of three months.
