On April 6 last year, the Ministry of Energy and Azerenergy OJSC signed an investment contract with Masdar for a 230 megawatt solar power station (SPS) project, contracts for the purchase of energy and connection to the grid.

The solar power station will produce 500 million kWh of electricity per year, save 110 million cubic meters of natural gas, reduce carbon emissions by 200,000 tons and create new jobs. The cost of the project is $200 million. The station will be integrated into the power system by connecting to the Yug substation.

In accordance with the Presidential Decree “On accelerating reforms in the energy sector” dated May 29, 2019, in order to develop the renewable energy sector, in cooperation with about 10 international energy companies, including Masdar, a thorough analysis of the proposals of companies for investment projects was carried out, and in conditions of high competition and transparency, the selection process was carried out in three stages. According to its results, on January 9, 2020, executive agreements were signed with ACWA Power from Saudi Arabia and Masdar from the UAE for the implementation of pilot projects in the field of renewable energy. The implementation of the SPS project is also ensured in coordination with the commission established by the order of the head of state “On measures for the implementation of pilot projects in the field of the use of renewable energy sources” dated December 5, 2019.
