One drug trafficker neutralized on Iranian-Azerbaijani border

Azerbaijani border guards stopped drug smuggling from Iran, oxu.az reports citing joint information from the State Border Service (SBS) and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

So, on the evening of April 4, 2022, on the territory of the border outpost of the Horadiz border detachment near the village of Shikhalyagaly, Jabrayil region, the border patrol noticed six armed persons who violated the state border from the Iranian side.

The frontier post was raised in a gun, the service area was completely cordoned off. While trying to escape, the violators opened fire on the border guards. One of the criminals was neutralized, the rest fled, taking advantage of the darkness and dense vegetation on the territory.

The identity of the neutralized violator was established – he turned out to be Iranian citizen Behnam Balai (born 1996), with him a Kalashnikov assault rifle and three packages with 32 kg 270 g of drugs were found.

During a search operation using unmanned aerial vehicles, a citizen of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammed Zarehi Taghi was found hiding in the reeds. Activities to locate and capture other violators continue. The Iranian side has been informed about the incident.

A criminal case has been initiated on this fact, the State Border Service and the Prosecutor General’s Office are conducting joint operational-search and investigative actions.
