Iran’s spy network in Azerbaijan exposed, five people arrested

As a result of the activities carried out by the State Security Service, it was established that Askerov Zahir Fakhreddin oglu, who worked as the captain of the ship of the Caspian Sea Oil Flotilla, while receiving religious education in the Iranian city of Gum, was attracted to secret cooperation by representatives of the special services of the said country in exchange for material interest, APA reports.

Over the past period, on their behalf, he collected information about companies and representative offices of foreign states operating in our country, about the place and time of naval exercises in the Caspian Sea, about cargo transported to oil platforms. Thus, Z. Askerov was engaged in espionage, transmitted the indicated information by mobile phone, as well as directly during meetings with these persons in Iran.

As a result of the investigation, groups under the names “Müzakirələr”, “Elanlar” and others were identified in the WhatsApp application, in which citizens of Azerbaijan were involved. They acted under the influence of Tohid Ibrahimbayli, Orkhan Mammadov, Elshad Hajiyev, who were hiding in Iran and evading criminal responsibility.

As it became known, through these groups, radical, religious extremist ideas were disseminated, contrary to modern international law, human rights, the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, designed to create a religious state in Azerbaijan.

The State Security Service continues complex investigative and operational measures.
