Former Head of the Executive Power, arrested by the State Security Service, appeals to the Supreme Court

Ismayil Veliyev, the former head of the Neftchala District Executive Authority, who is under arrest, has filed a cassation appeal against the verdict, oxu.az reports. The complaint has been sent to the Supreme Court and will be considered under the chairmanship of Judge Ilgar Gylydzhov. The date of the preparatory hearing of the court is still unknown.

I. Veliyev and other persons were detained by employees of the State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan in February 2020. They were charged under Articles 179.3.2 (misappropriation or embezzlement on a large scale), 308.2 (abuse of official powers, entailing grave consequences), 311.3.1 (receiving a bribe by a group of persons by prior agreement or an organized group), 311.3.2 (repeated bribe taking), 311.3.3 (large bribe taking) and 313 (official forgery) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Lankaran Grave Crimes Court sentenced I. Veliyev to 10 years in prison. By decision of the Shirvan Court of Appeal, the term was reduced to 9 years and 6 months.
