Large-scale pardon of convicts is expected in Azerbaijan

A large-scale pardon is expected in connection with the 100th anniversary of the national leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev, 1news.az reports.

According to Alimamed Nuriyev, head of the Foundation for Constitutional Studies, member of the Pardon Commission under the President of Azerbaijan, large-scale events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Heydar Aliyev are being held in Azerbaijan. And, as expected, pardon will be among them.

According to Nuriev, the commission has received about 1,500 applications so far. They will be accepted until the end of April, when it is planned to complete the meetings of the commission. Based on their results, a final conclusion will be adopted, which will fall on the table of President Ilham Aliyev.

So far, no one can say how many people will be released from serving the rest of the sentence. There are no restrictions on applying to the president for a pardon, but making the final decision is the exclusive prerogative of the head of state, Nuriyev said.
