Former chief of staff arrested for bribery

The former chief of staff of the Nth military unit located in Baku, Vusal Aliyev, was arrested for bribery, oxu.az reports with reference to Qafqazinfo. He served with the rank of captain and received a large bribe from several military personnel. He was charged under Article 311.3.2 (taking a bribe/passive bribery committed repeatedly) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan (CC AR). The criminal case was investigated in the Baku Military Court.

It is noted that V. Aliyev was awarded various medals for his service. He also served as an officer representing Azerbaijan in Afghanistan. Taking this into account, the defense asked the court to impose a non-custodial sentence.

The court considered the service of the accused a mitigating circumstance and, when imposing the punishment, applied Article 62 (imposition of a more lenient punishment than provided for the crime) of the Criminal Code of the Azerbaijan Republic.

According to the verdict, V. Aliyev was sentenced to four years in prison to be served in a general regime correctional facility.
