The Baku Court of Appeal has considered a complaint against the decision to choose a preventive measure in the form of arrest for human rights activist Rufat Safarov, oxu.az reports with reference to APA. At today’s session chaired by Judge Emin Mehdiyev, the appeal was not satisfied. The decision of the Binagadi District Court was upheld unchanged.

Earlier, by the decision of the Binagadi District Court, a preventive measure in the form of arrest for a period of 4 months was chosen for R. Safarov. He was charged under Articles 221.1 (hooliganism), 127.2.3 (intentional infliction of less serious harm to health, committed in a generally dangerous manner or out of hooligan motives) and 178.3.2 (fraud committed with causing major damage) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Trial of the head of 35 companies

The first hearing of the case of Fagani Rahimov, the head of 35 companies accused of embezzling large sums of state funds, was held in the Baku Court of Grave Crimes under the chairmanship of Judge Rasim Sadykhov, oxu.az reports. The prosecutor read out the indictment, Rahimov partially admitted guilt. F. Rahimov’s lawyer filed a motion to replace the preventive measure in the form of arrest with an alternative to it. Discussion of the motion was postponed until the next hearing. The trial will continue on January 7, 2025.

According to the investigation, Rahimov, whose companies have repeatedly won tenders from various government agencies, embezzled large sums of money. He carried out most of the fraud through his company İnşaat-F.

In total, about 600,000 manats were transferred to Fagani Rahimov’s companies by state institutions. 62,000 manat of these funds were laundered in order to conceal their real source.
