A large batch of drugs worth €272 million intended for transit to Europe has been destroyed in Azerbaijan. This was reported by the State Commission for Combating Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking, Report informs. The operation was organized by a working group of the State Commission with the participation of representatives of state bodies.
Narcotic and psychotropic substances with a total weight of 5 tons 168 kg 332 grams were seized from illegal circulation at various times by the country’s customs authorities. In connection with the incidents, 24 criminal cases were initiated, in which the court decided to destroy the drugs.
91.3% of the destroyed drugs are the most dangerous – 4 tons 662 kg 185 grams of heroin and 58 kg 837 grams of methamphetamine. In addition, 369 kg 529 grams of opium, 77 kg 779 grams of hashish and other substances were destroyed.
98.7% of these drugs or 5 tons 105 kg 990 grams in 17 cases were seized at the southern border and were intended for transit through the territory of Azerbaijan to European countries. The average retail value of the destroyed drugs on the illegal market in Europe is more than 272 million euros.
The destruction campaign was carried out transparently, in accordance with international standards and national legislation. The process was monitored by representatives of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the media and public organizations.
