EU finally gives Azerbaijan up
The European Union is reviewing its neighbourhood concept and talks on expansion. One factor is the desire of a number of countries in the integration project Eastern Partnership not to move away from Russia. This was stated in an interview to Ukrainian edition of ‘Apostrophe’ by the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy, Johannes Hahn, haqqin.az reports.
‘Now we are revising our concept of the neighbourhood and the negotiations on enlargement. One of the main elements of the new strategy is to develop a more individual approach to each state. The fact is that the three countries-neighbours of the European Union – Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia – aspire to become part of the EU. At the same time other (Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan – Ed.) states are trying not to increase the distance from its neighbour to the east (Russia – Ed.),’ he said.
‘And that’s fine. We must consider the interests of our neighbours. But we should not forget about their own interests. Therefore, we compare them. This is done for the good of our neighbours and ourselves. The main goal of the EU is the development of the bilateral approach,’ said Hahn.
