Court denies appeals submitted by former high ranking employees of IBA
The Baku Court of Appeal has denied an appeals filed by Jahangir Hajiyev, the imprisoned chairman of the Board of the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA) OJSC, and others arrested alongside him.
The jury issued the verdict that civil lawsuit of AZN 1.2 million against M. Jahangirov be cancelled and deducted from Jahangir Hajiyev instead.
It should be noted that the Baku Court of Appeal had held the preliminary hearing on the appeal filed by the aforementioned persons. During that hearing, the attorneys filed a petition for judicial investigation. However, the petition was denied. The attorneys then filed a cassation appeal, which was denied as well and submitted to the Baku Court of Appeal for reconsideration.
The former chairman of the IBA Board Jahangir Hajiyev, the former heads of the bank’s Central branch Anar Sultanov and Ilgar Abdullayev, the former director of Inter Security LLC Ibrahim Huseynov, the former head of the bank’s Central branch Yusif Alakbarov, the former head of the bank’s Transport Branch Kanan Orujov, the former head of the bank’s Narimanov Branch Mammad Jahangirov and the former director of the Baku hazelnut factory Azad Javadov, who are involved in the case, were arrested on charges under articles 179.3.1, 179.3.2 (embezzlement on a large scale by an organized group), 308.2 (abuse of power, resulting in grave consequences), 309.2 (abuse of power, resulting in grave crimes), 313 (official forgery), 228.1 and 228.4 (illegal storage and carrying of firearms).
Jahangir Hajiyev was sentenced to 15 years in prison, Azad Javadov to 10 years and 11 months, Yusif Alakbarov to 7 years and 6 months, and Ibrahim Huseynov to 6 years and 5 months. Mammad Jahangirov got 7 years and 6 months of suspended sentence.
