The Appeal Court ruled in the “Nardaran case” in the absence of defendants’ lawyers

According to contact.az internet portal On July 20, 2017 the Baku Appeals Court ruled on the complaint of the accused in the “Nardaran case”, leaving the verdict of the court of first instance in force. At the same time, lawyers say that the court read out the decision in the absence of lawyers. Previously the defendants staged a protest action because the judge, not allowing all the defendants, gave a final word to the prosecutor.

In response, the accused threw shoes and bottles of water on the judges, and the judge suspended the meeting indefinitely.

As it turned out after the lawyers left the court building, the meeting was resumed and a decision was announced, reported lawyers Javad Javadov and Fariz Namazli. Lawyer Namazli in an interview with a correspondent of Turan regarded this as a violation of the rights of the defendants to defend.

He said that the defense will lodge an appeal against the decision of the Baku Appeal Court.

Recall that the figurants of this case are the leader of the movement “Muslim Unity” Tale Bagirzade, 16 more believers, as well as the deputy chairman of the People’s Front Party Fuad Gahramanli.

They were arrested in November-December 2015 in Nardaran and sentenced for long periods on charges of preparing forcible change of the state system, illegal storage of weapons and other serious crimes.

In the court of first instance these charges, according to the monitoring of human rights organizations, were not confirmed. The defendants claimed that they gave confessions under torture.

International organizations condemned the unfair trial. Fuad Gahramanli is recognized as a “prisoner of conscience”, he is not involved in the events in Nardaran at all.
