The U.S. State Department Human Rights standards

In recent years there have been voices in Azerbaijan, which in matters of human rights the U.S. State Department applies double standards.

The latest report of the U.S. State Department on human rights in the world in 2011 refutes such insinuations.

Thus, the report states that the most important issues of human rights are cruel treatment of prisoners and detainees by government officials, as well as the presence of unsatisfactory conditions in prisons of country.

The second serious problem, the report called shortcomings in the rule of law, concern over ensuring an independent and impartial court, as well as due process protections. In third place – government intervention in the fundamental freedom and associations and in a number of areas including intervention in the strikes, harassment and intimidation of trade union activists, etc.

The U.S. State Department also noted that during the year security forces used excessive force against demonstrators but no one was prosecuted for that. According to the report, it a remarkable is protest action after which began the persecution of political opponents and also began to receive reports of politically motivated arrests.

The article notes that despite the fact that the parliament passed a law providing greater transparency of information about the owners of the media; citizens have limited access to alternative information. While the independent media to actively disseminate the different views, the major television channels have close ties with the government, in one sense or another covered under their direct or indirect influence.
