Statement of the Ombudsman in connection with the anniversary of the Khojaly genocide

Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva made a statement on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, APA reports.

The statement says that 30 years have passed since one of the worst tragedies of the 20th century, the Khojaly genocide, which is a grave crime against mankind and humaneness: “As a result of the policy of ethnic cleansing and genocide pursued by Armenia against Azerbaijanis throughout history, hundreds of civilians were massacred, expelled from their lands. The worst of the massacres committed by the Armenian armed forces took place in the city of Khojaly.
On the night of February 25-26, 1992, in the city of Khojaly, the armed forces of Armenia, with the participation of Armenian terrorist groups and the 366th motorized rifle regiment of the former Soviet army stationed in the city of Khankendi, committed an act of genocide against the civilian population.

The statement notes that as a result of the genocide, 613 people were killed with particular cruelty, including 106 women, 63 children and 70 old people, 1275 people were taken hostage and tortured: “The fate of 150 of them is still unknown, including including 68 women and 26 children. During the massacre, 487 people received severe bodily injuries of varying severity. Also, 8 families were completely destroyed, 130 children lost one of their parents, and 25 children lost both parents.”

Despite the fact that 30 years have passed since the genocide, unfortunately, the international community, demonstrating double standards, did not give a proper political and legal assessment of this act of genocide, and the perpetrators of the crime have not yet been brought to justice.
The world community and international organizations associated with it must adequately respond to the act of genocide in Khojaly, recognize this crime as genocide, and bring its customers and perpetrators to justice,” the statement says.
