Court released drug-dealing former police officer

The trial on the criminal case of former police major Tural Makhmudov, accused of drug trafficking, has ended in the Baku Court of Grave Crimes, reports oxu.az.

At the session chaired by judge Afgan Hajiyev, the judgement was read out, T. Makhmudov was sentenced to restraint of liberty (wearing an electronic bracelet) for a period of 1 year 4 months and 18 days. The measure of restraint chosen for the accused in the form of arrest was replaced with a written undertaking not to leave, and he was released from custody in the courtroom.

The accused previously worked as an operative in the drug control department of one of the district police departments. In 2018, he resigned from the internal affairs bodies of his own free will.

On May 25, 2021, T. Makhmudov was detained by officers of the Main Directorate for Combating Drugs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs while trying to deliver illegally purchased and stored methamphetamine to a “client” in excess of what was needed for personal consumption.

A criminal case was initiated against the ex-policeman under article 234.4.3 (illegal acquisition and sale of drugs on a large scale) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, he was taken into custody.
