Former parliamentary candidate arrested for fraud
Ex-candidate for deputy of the Milli Majlis, lawyer Vugar Mammadov was arrested. In 2020, he nominated himself as a candidate from the 109th Balakan constituency, oxu.az reports with reference to Qafqazinfo. V. Mammadov is accused of fraud against five people.
The former parliamentary candidate made false promises to the victims that he would get their relatives jobs in government agencies, help privatize land plots and commute the sentences of prisoners. According to the indictment, he embezzled a total of 173,600 manats from the victims. He was also involved in the sale of leeches. V. Mammadov does not consider himself guilty and states that the testimony of the victims is slander. He knows one of the victims, Sarvan Aliyev, personally since the election campaign. Thus, S. Aliyev financially supported the campaign, and V. Mammadov promised to help him in registering the land plot for this. According to him, a total of 200,000 manats were donated to his election campaign. This money was spent on renting the election headquarters, campaigning work, etc.
Based on the collected evidence, Vugar Mammadov was charged under Article 178.3.2 (fraud on an especially large scale) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and a preventive measure in the form of arrest was chosen against him.
