Judgement passed in case of attempted murder of akhund of Meshadi Dadash mosque

The trial of Elshan Huseynov, accused of attempted murder of the akhund of the Meshadi Dadash mosque and attempted murder of two or more people, has ended in the Baku Court of Grave Crimes, oxu.az reports. According to the judgement read out at the hearing chaired by Judge Rasim Sadikhov, Elshan Huseynov was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

The state prosecutor demanded 20 years in prison for the defendant.

As previously established by the investigation of the State Security Service of Azerbaijan, on December 30, 2023, Elshan Huseynov, armed with a knife, broke into the Meshadi Dadash mosque in the Nasimi district of Baku with the aim of attempting to kill the imam and well-known public figure Ali Sherbetov in order to interrupt his official activities.

Elshan Huseynov was charged under Articles 29,120.2.3 (attempted murder in connection with the performance of official duties by the victim), 29,120.2.6 (attempted murder with the aim of facilitating the commission of another crime), 29,120.2.7 (attempted murder of two or more persons), 29,120.2.11 (attempted murder related to terrorism), 29,120.2.12 (attempted murder motivated by religious hatred) and 277 (attempt on the life of a public figure) of the Criminal Code of the Azerbaijan Republic.
