Iranian fishermen involved in drug smuggling across the Caspian Sea detained

Iranian fishermen who attempted to smuggle drugs from Iran to Azerbaijan via the Caspian Sea have been detained. As Report informs citing the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the smuggling of over 13 kg of drugs and 4,400 tablets illegally delivered to the country via the Caspian Sea has been prevented.

As a result of a joint special operation by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Border Service in the city of Sumgait, on the shores of the Caspian Sea, Iranian citizens Ghaffar Gizil, 32, and Behzat Garanejat, 34, were detained. 11 kg 680 g of marijuana, 1 kg 510 g of heroin and 4,400 methadone tablets were found in their boat.

The detainees stated that they smuggled drugs into Azerbaijan from the Iranian province of Gumush through the neutral zone in the Caspian Sea on the border of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan for the purpose of subsequent sale.

It was established that fishermen G. Gyzyl and B. Garanejat were periodically involved in drug smuggling into Azerbaijan.
