The preliminary investigation into the criminal case of Igbal Abilov, accused of treason and cooperation with the Armenian special services, has been completed, Oxu.Az reports. The materials of the investigation conducted by the Main Investigation Department of the State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan have been submitted to the court. I. Abilov was brought final charges under Articles 274 (treason), 281.3 (public calls against the state, committed on the instructions of foreign organizations or their representatives) and 283.1 (incitement to national, racial, social or religious hatred and enmity) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Penalties under these articles provide for punishment up to life imprisonment.

The case will be heard in the Lankaran Court of Grave Crimes under the chairmanship of Judge Hammed Nuriyev.

I. Abilov was detained by the State Security Service in July last year. According to initial information, while living in a third country, he carried out orders from representatives of the Armenian special services and participated in activities aimed at inciting ethnic hatred in Azerbaijan.

At the court hearing to select a preventive measure, secret negotiations between I. Abilov on Skype with the head of the Iranian Studies Department at Yerevan State University and director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of Armenia Garnik Asatryan, who is conducting targeted work against the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan under the control of the Armenian special services, were made public.
