Sentence passed on individuals who committed fraud related to social housing

Two individuals have been convicted of fraud related to social housing, Oxu.Az reports. The case brought against Khagani B. (born in 1985) and Arzu Ch. (born in 1969) under Articles 178.2.1 (fraud committed by a group of persons by prior agreement), 178.2.2 (fraud committed repeatedly) and 178.2.4 (fraud causing significant damage) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan was heard in court.
During the investigation, it was established that Arzu Ch. received 5,000, 10,000 and 23,000 manats from her 18 acquaintances working at the Republican Diagnostic Center and other places, promising to help them acquire one-, two- and three-room apartments from social housing through her colleague Khagani B., who allegedly had acquaintances in the State Housing Development Agency (MİDA).
In court, Arzu Ch. stated that she gave Khagani B. the money she received from the victims, and he misappropriated the funds, deceiving them. The man, on the contrary, noted in his testimony that Arzu Ch., having received the money from the victims, opened a cafe called Old Castle in the center of the capital together with her son. According to him, the woman rented this establishment and spent 70-80 thousand manats on repairs. He also said that Arzu Ch. bought herself a car and often went on vacation.
By the court’s decision, Khagani B. was sentenced to 1 year, 11 months and 27 days, and Arzu Ch. – to 2 years, 11 months and 23 days of imprisonment. They will serve their sentences in a general regime penal colony.
