The term of arrest of Khadija Ismayilova is extended

On 14.05.2015 Nasimi District Court of Baku considered the presentation of the Attorney General today on the extension of the arrest of the journalist Khadija Ismayilova.

The court granted the idea and extended the detention for three months – until August 24, reports Contact.az with reference to Turan agency.

The investigation reiterated its previous arguments justifying maintenance of  Ismaylova in custody. The prosecutor’s office claims that Ismayilova could affect witnesses and hiding from the investigation. The investigation states the need to obtain expert opinion.

The lawyer stated his intention to appeal the decision of the court today.A motion was put forward to change the measure of restraint to house arrest, which will be considered on May 15.

This is the third extension of detention of  Ismailov.

Khadija Ismayilova was arrested on December 5, 2014 on charges of incitement to suicide attempts  a journalist Tural Mustafayev. However, on February 13, prosecutors filed new charges under three Articles – 179.3.2 (embezzlement on a large scale), 192.2.2 (illegal business with extraction of large income) and 308.2 (abuse of power, resulting in grave consequences.)
