Preliminary investigation into the case of journalists accused of extortion completed

The preliminary investigation into the criminal case of journalists Asaf Novruzov and Mahsud Safarov, accused of extortion, has been completed.

The criminal materials collected against the accused were sent to the Baku Court for Grave Crimes. The case has been transferred to Judge Afgan Hajiyev, oxu.az reports.

According to the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan, during the preliminary investigation, reasonable suspicions arose that the head of the cia.az portal Asaf Novruzov, colluding with the employee of the same site Mahsud Safarov, threatened officials of various state structures, institutions and organizations to spread false information about them reality, information that could damage their business reputation, thereby extorting money from them.

A. Novruzov and M. Safarov were charged under Articles 182.2.1 (extortion committed by a group of persons) and 182.2.2 (extortion committed repeatedly) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and a measure of restraint in the form of arrest was chosen against them by a court decision.
