State Security Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan: arrested on charges of participation in illegal armed groups

An Azerbaijani citizen accused of participating in illegal armed formations outside the country has been arrested, oxu.az reports with reference to the State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan.

“As part of the complex operational and investigative measures carried out by the State Security Service to combat international terrorism, on suspicion of involvement in armed terrorist organizations in Turkey, a citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan Akif Osmanov (born 1977) was detained and arrested, and then, due to lack of evidence, was released. with a fake passport in the name of a citizen of Uzbekistan, Ilerjon Isanov. Nevertheless, reasonable suspicions arose that he was involved in terrorist attacks that were committed during armed conflicts outside the country, unleashed on the basis of religious hatred.

“In the course of the investigation of the criminal case, it was proved that A. Osmanov, after undergoing training in a special training camp in the Syrian city of Atma and mastering the skills of using firearms and explosives, participated in the activities of the illegal armed group Azeri Jamaat, based on the soil of religious radicalism and enmity, was involved in the battles for the village of Sheikh Suleiman, during which he received a shrapnel wound. It was further established that the terrorist organization provided him with a fake passport in the name of a citizen of Uzbekistan in order to ensure free stay and movement in the territory of other countries and evade criminal liability.

A. Osmanov was detained. He was charged under articles 12.1, 279.1 (creation of armed formations or groups not provided for by the legislation of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as participation in their creation and activities, supplying them with weapons, ammunition, explosives, military equipment or military equipment, committed on the territory of a foreign state) UK AR. By a court decision, a measure of restraint in the form of arrest was chosen against him.
